The demand for high quality, actionable, real-time video is rapidly increasing throughout the Maritime and Sub-sea markets. Real-time, actionable video requirements are expanding across a number of industry specific applications leveraging real time video enhancement from Port & Harbor Security & Surveillance to Autonomous Ship Automation. The industry is committing significant additional resources to Security & Surveillance. Governments across the world are investing in high quality Video Surveillance Systems as part of their port and harbor control, security and anti-terrorism infrastructure.
All organizations use advanced video monitoring and analytics for security and to improve operational efficiency. High quality actionable video is essential to key, common video monitoring and analytics. Maritime applications are challenged with extreme weather conditions, such as rain, snow, and fog. Fog and rain can severely limit the range of a camera system due to scattering of light off droplets of water. The higher the density of droplets, the more the captured video is diminished.
There are ways to classify fog. An often-used classification is the one used by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). According to this system, fog can be classified in 4 categories:
Category I: visual range 1220 meters
Category II: visual range 610 meters
Category IIIa: visual range 305 meters
Category IIIc: visual range 92 meters
The reason for degradation of visibility in a foggy atmosphere is the absorption and scattering of natural or artificial illumination by fog particles. The amount of absorption and scattering depends on the micro-physical structure of the fog particles, which are also called aerosols.
Rainfall intensity is classified according to the rate of precipitation, which depends on the considered time:
Light Rain — Precipitation rate is < 2.5 mm (0.098 in) per hour
Moderate Rain — Precipitation rate is between 2.5 mm (0.098 in) – 7.6 mm (0.30 in)
Heavy Rain — Precipitation rate is > 7.6 mm (0.30 in) per hour
Violent Rain — Precipitation rate is > 50 mm (2.0 in) per hour
